In pop culture, a "parley" (often colloquially spelled "parlay") is a negotiation conference between enemies to discuss terms of a truce.

Two pirate crews discover the same treasure map. Instead of fighting, the captains raise white flags. During the parley, they learn: Crew A has cannons but no navigator. Crew B has a navigator but a damaged hull. They agree to split the voyage: Crew A provides protection, Crew B charts the course, and treasure is divided 60/40 to the crew who digs first. In maritime lore, pirates would raise a white flag to request a parley: a temporary truce to negotiate terms, exchange prisoners, or avoid bloodshed.
