Despite their immense value, coral reefs are collapsing at an alarming rate due to anthropogenic pressures. The single greatest threat is climate change, specifically rising sea temperatures. When water becomes too warm, corals expel their symbiotic algae in a process known as coral bleaching. Without the algae, the coral turns white and begins to starve. Prolonged bleaching leads to mass mortality.
