A "VMDK Recovery File" is essentially a damaged or orphaned virtual disk that requires intervention.

If it reports a problem, run:

vmkfstools -i /vmfs/volumes/datastore/source_vm/source.vmdk /vmfs/volumes/datastore/recovery_vm/recovered.vmdk
