Unlike a single number stamped on the side of the machine, a load chart is a complex matrix that correlates boom length, boom angle, and load radius to determine the maximum safe lifting capacity. For example, a crane might have a maximum capacity of 100 tons, but this is usually only achievable at a very short radius. Once the boom is extended to its maximum length, the capacity at the tip might drop to just a few tons.
