Early thin clients (1990s–2000s) were synonymous with compromise. Wintel PCs offered local Excel processing; thin clients offered sluggish terminal emulation. Research by Tanenbaum (2006) suggested that the "cycle of thin vs. fat" was driven by network bandwidth costs. However, three shifts have revived the model:
