Hikers and birdwatchers traditionally relied on heavy, expensive printed field guides by Peterson or Audubon. Enature.net digitized this experience. It offered a comprehensive, searchable database of over 4,800 species of North American plants, animals, insects, and fungi. For the first time, a user could sit at a home computer, describe the color of a mysterious warbler they had seen, and within seconds, generate a list of possible matches complete with high-quality photographs and range maps. This was revolutionary. It transformed species identification from a slow, analog process into an instant, interactive discovery.
