The evolution of ultrasonic inspection has been driven by the need for higher probability of detection (POD), faster data acquisition speeds, and improved characterization of defects. While conventional UT provides single-value measurements and basic imaging, and standard PAUT offers sectorial scans (S-scans) and linear scans (L-scans), advanced imaging techniques are now required to inspect complex geometries and coarse-grained materials.

The result is a real-time, cross-sectional image (S-scan) of the material—similar to a medical ultrasound, but for welds, composites, and forged metals.
