At its peak, the Yeke Kingdom controlled a territory of approximately half a million square kilometers. Its strength was rooted in its unique position as a middleman in the transcontinental trade network.

The Yeke Kingdom was first and foremost a war machine and a commercial enterprise. Msiri’s title was Mwami Mwenda Msiri , "King Msiri the Conqueror." He ruled through a council of war chiefs ( wasulo ), mostly his original Nyamwezi companions. The kingdom’s economy was entirely monopolistic. All significant trade—in copper, ivory, and slaves—passed through Msiri’s hands. He was the ultimate broker.
