The Zoom Whitening Gel contains a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide (usually 25%). When the Activator is introduced, it lowers the activation energy required to break the peroxide bonds. This causes the peroxide to break down rapidly into highly reactive —specifically, hydroxyl radicals and perhydroxyl anions.

The Zoom Activator is a proprietary formulation mixed with the Zoom Whitening Gel. Its primary function is to jump-start the decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide molecule.

The Zoom system is famous for its LED accelerator light. The Activator is designed to work in perfect synergy with this light source.

The Zoom kit typically comes with the Whitening Gel and the Activator as separate components. They must be mixed chair-side. Proper mixing is essential; an incomplete mixture results in uneven whitening and "zebra striping" on the enamel.
